If you have ever tried to push away a difficult thought or feeling — only to find it growing stronger — you already understand the central problem ACT addresses. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy offers a different path.

Who It's For

ACT is for anyone who struggles with anxiety, depression, self-doubt, or feeling stuck. It is especially helpful if you have found that trying to "get rid of" negative thoughts did not work. ACT is also effective for teenagers, because it validates their experience rather than pathologising it.

What It's About

ACT uses six core processes to build psychological flexibility: acceptance, defusion, being present, self-as-context, values, and committed action. The goal is not to feel better — it is to live better, even when uncomfortable emotions show up.

Key Topics

  • The Happiness Trap — Why chasing happiness can make us less happy
  • Defusion — Seeing thoughts as just thoughts, not commands
  • Acceptance — Making space for difficult feelings
  • Values Clarification — What truly matters to you
  • Committed Action — Steps toward the life you want

Why I Recommend It

This is a useful introduction to a different way of relating to difficult thoughts and feelings. It asks: given all of this, what kind of life do you want to live?
