School stress and exam pressure are among the most common challenges I see with young clients. If you are a teenager reading this: how you are feeling is not a sign that you are not coping. It is a sign that you are carrying a lot, and that is genuinely hard.

Signs Stress Is Building

You might notice: trouble sleeping, feeling irritable or tearful, your mind going blank during tests, physical symptoms like headaches or tension, avoiding study because it feels overwhelming, or feeling like no matter how hard you try it is not good enough. These are signs your nervous system is overloaded.

Why School Stress Feels Different Now

Young people today face pressures previous generations did not — social media, comparison culture, and heightened academic competition. Your brain is also going through massive development during adolescence, which makes emotional responses feel more intense. This is not a character flaw — it is biology.

Practical Strategies

  • Break it down — Study in 25-minute blocks with breaks in between
  • Name what you are feeling — Simply saying "I am stressed" can reduce its power
  • Move your body — A short walk resets your nervous system
  • Talk to someone — You do not have to carry this alone
  • Be kind to yourself — Would you speak to a friend the way you speak to yourself after a bad mark?

How Therapy Can Support You

I use CBT to help young people manage school stress, with practical tools for challenging anxious thoughts.
