What Is Gottman Method?

Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the Gottman Method is one of the most rigorously researched approaches to couples therapy. It focuses on building the 'Sound Relationship House' — trust, commitment, shared meaning, and healthy conflict management. Sessions are structured, practical, and designed to give you skills you can use long after therapy ends.

How It Works

The Gottman Method begins with a comprehensive assessment of your relationship, including joint interviews and individual conversations. From there, your therapist works with you to identify your strengths as a couple and the areas that need attention. Sessions focus on building practical skills — improving communication, managing conflict constructively, deepening friendship and intimacy, and creating shared meaning. You'll learn techniques like the 'Gentle Start-Up' for difficult conversations and the 'Stress-Reducing Conversation' for daily connection.

What to Expect

Sessions typically start with both partners present. The therapist facilitates structured conversations that help you express your needs and listen to each other more effectively. You'll receive practical exercises to practice between sessions. Many couples notice improvements within a few sessions, though deeper patterns may take longer to shift.

No. A Gottman-trained therapist remains neutral and works to help both partners feel heard and understood.
This varies. Some couples benefit from 10-20 sessions; others attend longer term. We'll discuss a plan after your initial sessions.
